How to Avoid Disaster & Keep Your Business Running

b2ap3_thumbnail_server-room.jpgIf your data center is anything like 40% of data centers nationwide, then your computer server exists in a place that it was never intended to inhabit. Quite likely, it’s operating in an empty office, a mechanical room or even a closet where space is limited and its temperature could increase faster than your cooling system is capable of decreasing it. This very real and risky possiblitiy could force your server to shut down, potentially disrupting your business for days or even weeks.

How can you avoid that kind of disaster and keep your business running? There are several options available to you:

  • CRAC. Climate control is automatic with a Computer Room Air Conditioning unit (CRAC.) This device monitors and maintains the temperature, air distribution and humidity in your data center, keeping the environment cool and your computer server functioning properly.

  • Room design. Improving existing room design or building a more expansive enviroment tailored to the needs of a data center will provide you with better air flow and temperature control in combination with other cooling equipment. Although costly, this option would provide a sound return on investment considering how critical it is to maintain an ongoing, functional computer server room.

While several options of varying complexity and expense exist, before making a final determiniation, it is important to consult with an HVAC expert. This is because there are a number of factors that go into determining the optimal computer room temperature, including the type of computer equipment being used and the configuration of the server room itself. To achieve that delicate balance between overheating and effective computer functionality, it is critical to your company and your business continuity to have a professional establish the best option for you.
