What is the single most beneficial thing you can do to extend the life of your furnace and help prevent costly repairs? It is simply to change your air filter on a regular basis between your seasonal tune-ups.
The reason is pretty straight forward. If your filters are plugged the furnace has to work extra hard to circulate air through the system. That translates into shorter equipment life and more frequent repairs.
How Frequently Must I Change My Filter?
There are several factors that come into play that determine how long a filter will last, but it isn't rocket science. The best advice we can offer is to remove your filter from the furnace monthly and inspect it. If the filter looks dirty, it is . . . replace it.
Many environmental issues will influence the life of your air filter.
- Number of People living in your home.
- Presence of animals such as cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.
- Air quality of your community.
- How often you leave your windows open to enjoy the fresh air.
- How many trips in and out of the house you make. (Young children can keep a door open longer than it is closed.)
- Home vs. Vacation Home. (A vacation home may see considerably less traffic and requre filter changes less frequently.)

Type of filter you or your Air Conditioning / Furnace requires.
- Hi filtration filter.
- Allergy relief filter.
- Thickness of filter (1" to 5").
- Number of ridges or folds present in the filter.
- Quality of the filter.
Manufacturers will often tell you to change your filters every two months. It is great to have a "rule-of-thumb" to go by, however there are many factors that will influence how often you really should change your filter.
